Did you know that in 1586, June: NC
history begins with a hurricane, Sir Frances Drake dropped in on
the Roanoke Hundred colony, the first English attempt at
permanent settlement on the North American continent. On
June 13, a hurricane (called a "terrible storm" by Governor
Ralph Lane) that lasted four days, battered the area and wrecked
many of his ships. The colonists were ready to go home, so
Drake took them back to England with him. (Courtesy of Jay
Barnes, Author of: North Carolina's Hurricane History)
It is no secret that the Southeast Coast of the
United States is directly impacted by hurricanes from time to time.
In fact, North Carolina has had no less than five tropical storms or
hurricanes make landfall since the 1996 hurricane season. Hurricane
Fran in September of 1996 was the worst by far as wind damage goes.
The other storms, such as Bertha, Bonnie and Floyd, were mere
nuisances as compared to the devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew
in extreme south Florida. But we must remember that it can happen
right here; where we live, work and play. Hurricane Hazel in 1954
was reported to be a strong category 4+ hurricane; with winds
perhaps as high as 160 miles per hour. This kind of hurricane would inflict
damage never before seen if it were to hit us here in this day and
age. If Hazel would hit the Carolina coast the cost
would exceed Katrina. Can we say 100 billion dollars!
The upcoming 2010 hurricane season, the forecast
team at Colorado State University expects "somewhat more" active
than the average 1950 to 2000 season. There will be (6-8)
hurricanes, (3-5) intense hurricanes of Category 3, and the
estimated number of hurricane days will be 30. There is a 40%
percent chance that an intense hurricane will landfall alone the
East Coast. Do your homework and be prepared!
